Mercury is known as Budha in vedic astrology which is a sanskrit word. Budha is associated with trade, communication and week day Wednesday also called Budhvar. Budha is represented as intellect, sharp minded and having a greenish complexion. Budha is believed to be son of Chandra (Moon) and Tara.
Chandra was the student of Brahspatia and tara was wife of Brahspati. Chandra forcefully captured Tara and married to him.Which results a never ending fight between Chandra and Brahspati. At that time Lord Brahma came to end this war and asked tara to go back to Brahaspati. When tara and chandra got separated, Chandra gave Budha to Rohini and Kritika (Two wives of Chandra).
When Budha grew up he got angry to know the truth of his birth. So, budha went to Himalyas and did Tapasya of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu got pleased with his tapa and became his teacher and taught him all the Vedas and other arts.
There is another belief that Budha lived with Brahaspati and Tara. Once chandra came and claimed to be Budha’s father. According to historians the identity of Budha’s father was hidden from him. Once he asked from Tara about his father in very aggressive manner. Then Tara told him the truth of his birth. Budha refused to go with Chandra and wished to be Brahaspati’s son.
