Mahabharata a great war of Hindu Religion. A war which taught us to differentiate between what is wrong and what is right, in which situation what decision to make. It plays an important role to taught society that how to respect women and women are not weak they are strong as equal as men, wheather its Shikhandini or Draupadi every women showed their strengths during this war. The great war of Mahabharata was fought at the ground of Kurukshetra. The land of Kurukshetra is still red with the blood shread happened during the war. We all know this is a war fought between Kaurvas and Pandavas, but along with them there were a lot of people who payed an important role during this war.
1 King Dhritrashtra
King Dhritrashtra was the father of one hundered sons named as Kauravas as well as he was King of Hastinapur. He was Blind by birth, because of which it was unable for him to became a king. But his brother Pandu gave up everything for his beloved brother. Drithrashtra got married with Gandhari, princess of gandhar. Dhritrashtra always wanted to became his son king after him. But his son didn’t hold all the capabilities of a good king; still he tried a lot to secure his son’s future. He taught us how to became perfect along with imperfections.
2 Queen Gandhari
Gandhari was the wife of King Dhritrashtra, princess of Gandhar. She was very beautiful and loving lady. She was a devoted wife. She not only married to a blind man, but at her marriage she decided to spent rest of her life as a blind woman. Later she became witness of the death of her hundred sons in 18 days. Her life taught us how to became a Pativrati patni and how a lady should respect her husband.
Kauravas are the sons of King Dhritrashtra and Gandhari. They are one hundred in number and Kauravas leader was their elder brother Duryodhan. All the kauravas obey Duryodhana’s command. Duryodhana was the one who insulted Draupadi in the front of court which became a reason for the war of Mahabharata.
Kunti was the wife of Pandu and daughter of Shurasena. She was also sister of Vasudeva and aunt of Lord Krishna. Being mother of Pandavas, she always taught her to follow the path of truth and Dharma. Kunti was the reason why draupadi wed to all five Pandavas. She taught us how to be on the path of Dharma and truth.
Pandavas are sons of Pandu and Kunti. They are five in number that’s why they are called as Pandvas. Pandavas was much strong than Kauravas rather they are only five. Their leader was Yudhistira, the elder son of Pandu. All pandavas love each other a lot. Later they married to Draupadi, daughter of drupad. They obey everything said by their mother Kunti.
6 Guru Dronacharya
Guru Drona (Dronacharya) was the teacher of Pandvas and Kaurvas. He taught them everything how to fight, how to write and how to read. According to historians Arjuna was his ideal student. Guru Drona had a conflict with the king Drupad. So he asked his defeat from his students Kauravas and Pandvas as fee of his teachings. He later helped both Kauravas and Pandavas in the great war of Mahabharata.
7 King Drupad
Drupad was the king of Panchal. He was the one who insulted Guru Drona due to his poor status. He didn’t have any son, but a daughter named Shikhandini. King drupad later fought for Pandvas against Kauravas in the great war of Mahabharata. Later he did a great Yaga and got a daughter named Draupadi.
Shikhandini was the first daughter of King Drupad. Shikhandini was a great warrior, she was the leader of the army of the Panchal. It is believed that she was the rebirth of the Princess Amba and blessed by the Gods that she will became a reason for the fall of Bhishma Pitamah. Shikhandini always wanted to became a son for his father but Drupad kept him realizing that she is a girl and can never became his son.
9 Bhishma Pitamah
Bhishma pitamah was son of king Shantanu. He devoted his life to serve the King of Hastinapur. He did so many good and bad things on the name on Dharma. He also refused to get married and gave his whole life to the king. He was cursed by princess Amba that she will kill him. Later princess Amba took birth as Shikhandini and helped Arjuna to kill Bhishma. He is a great example of loyalty and Dharma.
10 Lord Krishna
Lord Krishna played an important role in the war of Mahabharata. He was the son of Vasudev Yadav and Devaki, and king of Mathura as well as Varindavana. Krishna fought on the side of Pandavas. He became charioteer of Arjuna during the war and refused to pick any weapon during the war. Before the war get started Arjuna was hesitating to fight because he believed that all people of Kuru Kingdom was his relatives and he refused to kill them. But then Krishna gave him Geeta’s Updesh after which he was able to fight. He also helped Arjuna to kill Bhishma, he attacked with a wheel of chariot on Bhishma, by which he kept his vow as well as helped Arjuna. After the war of Mahabharata, queen Gandhari cursed Krishna that in few year his all descendents will die and nobody will live from Yadava’s.
Shakuni was the brother of Queen Gandhari. He loved his sister like his own child. When he heard that his sister is going to married with a blind man, he decided to go with his sister to her inlaws. He also made the Kauravas evil minded. He had a great impact on the mind of Duryodhana. Later in the Mahabharata war he fought for Kauravas and proved that he was a not w warrior but a manifesto.
Karna also known as Sutaputra, Angaraja and Radheya, was one of the important character of Mahabharata. He was the son of Surya (Sun) and Kunti, which made him elder brother of Pandvas. He was conceived and born when Kunti was unmarried. She hide her pregnancy and later abandon her new born son in shame. Then Karna was found by Suta couple Radheya and Adhiratha. They raised them and made him a better human being. Karana was born with earrings and armored breastplate like Lord Surya. He was the best friend of Duryodhana and vowed his life in the service of Duryodhna. Karana was a great warrior and a great Archery. It is said that he was the only one who can beat Arjuna in Archery.
Draupadi was the the princess of Panchal and wife of Pndavas. Arjuna got married to draupadi, but when he took her to his mother Kunti, she orderd him to share her with all of the brothers without seeing what it was. From that day Draupadi considered as the wife of all Pandavas. Historians said that Draupadi was the reason for the war of Mahabharata. Once upon a time Duryodhana invited Pandavas to play Chousat (Ancient Ludo) with him. Pandvas accepted the invitation, but during the game Yudhishtra lost his everything and gave Draupadi as a bet. But he lost her as well. Then Duryodhna who won Draupadi announced in the court that he wanted to remove Draupadi clothes (Cheer Haran) and wanted her to sit on her laps. Draupadi then called in the court and Duryodhana ordered him with the same. She kept asking for help from everyone present in the court, but nobody came forward to help her. Then she worshiped Lord Krishna and asked him for help. As a result Lord Krishna helped him by providing her endless sari cloth. But she was very angry with this incident and took a vow that she will tie her hair after the destruction of Kauravas. And Pandavas decided to fight a war against Kauravas against Pandavas.
Vedvayasa is considered as the author of Mahabharata along with a character of Mahabharata. He was the one who know all the Vedas and Puranas, reason why he known as Vedvayasa. The festival of Guru purnima of Vyasa Purnima is celebrated in his respect.
King Salya was the emperor of Madra Kingdom and brother of Madari. He was a powerful fighter and charioteer. He is the one who made Nakula and Sehdeva his heir because they were son of his sister. In the war of Mahabharata he fought for Kauravas because of some trick played by Duryodhna and later played a role of charioteer of Karana. After the death of Karana, he took command of Kauravas. But soon he was killed by yudhishthira.
Saindhava also known as Jayadratha was the husband of dushala (The only sister of Kauravas). He was the king of Sindhu, with total number of three wives. He proposed Draupadi in the absence of Pandavas, after her refusal he forcefully carried her to his kingdom. But later defeated by pandavas. In the Mahabharata he was killed by Arjuna. Jayadratha father boon him that whosoever will served his son’s head on ground will have his head divided into 100 pieces. Arjuna served his beheaded head in his father’s lap. After watching his head his father died at the same moment. His life taught us about a great relationship of father and son.
Vidura was the prime Minister of Hastinapura. He was the only one person who protested against Duryodhana at the time of Draupadi’s cheer harana. At the war of Mahabharata he beside with the Pandavas. He taught us sometimes it is important to break rules for the sake of truth and Dharma.
Babruvahana was the son of Anrjuna and chitrangda (princess of Manipura). He was the one who defeated Bheema and later fought with Arjuna. He was also successful to kill Arjuna, but later revived his life with the help of Nagamani. We should learn from him to became an ideal son.
Ghatotkacha was son of Bheema and Hidimbi. He was the owner of great power like his father, equal to 1000 elephants. Being a son of Rakshasa mother, he also had magical powers. Lord Krishna boon him that except him nobody in this word can match his powers and skills.
Dharamraja is the famous name of Yudhidhitra was the son of Kunti and King Pandu. He became the king of Inderprasta and later Hastinapura. He was the elder brother of Pandavas. He never took wrong decision in his entire life, that’s why he was able to reach Swarga at his death. He always followed the path of truth and Dharma. He was away from any kind of proud and greed.
